Jesper
and I was just about to end our hug-campaign when two winos (as we
understood) approached. We gave them a big hug and chatted a bit. The
two men showed great interest and seemed very impressed about our
journey and what we did. Suddenly they were digging in their pockets
and wanted to offer us all they had, a few coins. Jesper answered
that they really didn't have to give us anything but they insisted so
we received their last coins, ungwillingly. Their gesture broke our
hearts and Jesper nearly cried when we were leaving.
This
episode made me think of a metaphor:
If
I held a note of 500 SEK (about 50 €) and gave it to someone,
he/she would probably take it. If I crumpled it and tore its sides,
he/she would still very likely accept the money. Now then, if I spit
on it, stamped on it and walked away.. I bet someone would pick up
the money anyway.
But
how do we handle a real person...?
We
all have personal responsibility towards our surrounding and
Everybody can make a difference. You don't necessarily have to hug
everyone you see or give money to everyone you meet but you can
always give them your attention. Choose one day and make an effort to
see the ones you have in front of you. Look people in their eyes as
you pass. It matters.
